Renoir painted Luncheon of the Boating Party over several months in 1880–1881, gathering his friends and models at the Maison Fournaise restaurant at Chatou — a popular boating destination on the Seine. The models included his future wife Aline Charigot (holding the small dog at the lower left), the art critic Jules LaForgue, and the actress Ellen Andrée. Renoir's friend Gustave Caillebotte (another Impressionist painter) appears in the lower right corner.

The painting represented a technical tour de force: combining portrait-quality likenesses of 14 specific individuals with Impressionistic light on the food, wine, and striped awning — all in a composition of apparent spontaneity that required months of careful arrangement. Duncan Phillips purchased it in 1923 for $125,000 — the most he ever paid for a single work and still the centrepiece of his Washington collection.
