History & Story

Hopper painted Nighthawks in January 1942, just weeks after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. His wife Jo recorded in her diary that he based the composition on a diner he had noticed on Greenwich Avenue in New York's Greenwich Village. The three customers and the counterman are the only people visible in the entire canvas; no entry door is shown, and the street outside is completely empty.

The Art Institute of Chicago purchased the painting the same year it was painted for $3,000. Hopper, a reserved man who rarely discussed the meaning of his work, said only: "I simplified the scene a great deal and made the restaurant bigger. Unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city."

Why It Matters

Nighthawks achieves its emotional power through absence — no door into the diner, no other people on the street, no indication of connection between the three customers. The harsh fluorescent light in the diner becomes the only warmth in the composition, but it also exposes the figures rather than sheltering them. Hopper painted the quintessential experience of modern urban alienation, but without sentimentality — the painting neither condemns nor mourns, it simply observes.
