## What is Bajra Sandhi Monument known for?

The Monumen Perjuangan Rakyat Bali (Monument to the Struggle of the Balinese People), better known as Bajra Sandhi, was proposed in 1980 by Ida Bagus Mantra, then Governor of Bali. A design competition in 1981 was won by Ida Bagus Gede Yadnya, at the time an architecture student at Udayana University. Construction began in 1987 and was completed in 2001, and President Megawati Soekarnoputri inaugurated the monument on 14 June 2003. It is owned by the Bali provincial government and run by a technical unit of the provincial culture office; a multi-year renovation of the monument and its grounds began in 2015.

The name comes from the bajra, the bell a Hindu priest rings while reciting mantras, and the tower rises from the middle of the Niti Mandala field in Renon, on a site of 13.8 hectares near the Bali Governor's Office. Its numbers encode Indonesia's independence day: 17 steps at the main entrance, eight great pillars and a height of 45 metres stand for 17 August 1945. The design also draws on the lingga and yoni and on the Tri Mandala and Tri Angga concepts, and the pool around the monument represents the sea of milk surrounding the sacred mountain.

Inside, the museum is arranged over three levels. The ground floor has an information room, a library, a souvenir shop and an exhibition of 62 photographs of Balinese resistance to the Dutch, some original and some reproductions. The middle floor, built around the round Puser Tasik pond, is ringed by 33 dioramas of about 6 m² each, followed clockwise from hunter-gatherers around 3000 BC through the banjar and subak systems, Patih Jelantik's defiance of the Dutch in 1846 and the Puputan Badung of 1906 to I Gusti Ngurah Rai's last stand at Marga and the years 1950 to 1975.

A spiral staircase known as Tapak Dara rises from the pond to the top-floor viewing room, which has windows on every side over Renon; because the stair is considered sacred, menstruating women are asked not to climb it. The monument opens from 8:30 AM on weekdays and 9:30 AM at weekends, closing at 5 PM and on major holidays. It received 45,609 visitors in 2025. On Sunday mornings from 6 to 10 AM the surrounding field becomes a car-free zone popular with walkers and joggers, and weekends are generally the busiest time inside.
