About Design Museum

The Design Museum is the world's leading museum devoted to contemporary design and architecture. Founded in 1989 by Sir Terence Conran on the south bank of the Thames, it moved in 2016 to a landmark John Pawson-designed building on Kensington High Street — a former 1960s Commonwealth Institute with a hyperbolic paraboloid roof that Pawson transformed into one of London's most elegant gallery spaces.

The permanent collection 'Designer Maker User' traces the evolution of modern design through objects, graphics, fashion, and digital products — from the London Underground map and the AK-47 to the iPhone and Nike Air Max. Temporary exhibitions have covered everything from Ferrari and Stanley Kubrick to fashion designer Azzedine Alaïa and the annual Beazley Designs of the Year showcase.

The museum occupies three floors around a central atrium flooded with natural light from the distinctive roof. The ground floor hosts major temporary exhibitions; the top floor holds the permanent collection and a design studio where visitors can sketch and prototype. The basement level includes a dedicated gallery for fashion and product design.

At roughly 90 minutes for a focused visit, the Design Museum is one of London's most accessible major institutions — less overwhelming than the V&A next door but equally rewarding for anyone interested in how objects shape daily life. Kensington High Street offers excellent shopping and dining before or after a visit.
