## What is Gedung Sate Museum known for?

Gedung Sate was planned in the colonial era as an office for Dutch East Indies government departments that were to move from Batavia to Bandung. Construction began on 27 July 1920 to a design by J. Gerber, working with Eh. De Roo and G. Hendriks, and the building was completed in 1924; the wider plan was never finished. Its nickname, 'satay building', comes from the central pinnacle threaded with six spheres, said to represent the six million guilders the building cost. The design blends Dutch rationalism with Indonesian elements, and the building now serves as the office of West Java's governor.

The museum was inaugurated on 8 December 2017 by the then governor of West Java, Ahmad Heryawan, after being built for Rp11.5 billion in the lower level on the east side of the building. It is registered as a type C special museum, owned by the provincial government and run by its General Bureau and its Public Relations and Protocol Bureau. Rather than a collection of objects, it was designed around technology, with the stated aim of making Gedung Sate a place to learn about history, architecture and civil engineering.

The displays begin with phrases about Gedung Sate along the entrance corridor and a timeline of the development of Bandung and West Java from 1810 to 1924, followed by profiles of West Java's leaders and a map of heritage sites across Bandung. A mini-theatre screens a short film on the history of Bandung and Gedung Sate, interactive glass panels and floors explain the architecture and construction, augmented-reality glasses show the building going up, and a 3D virtual-reality experience flies visitors around Gedung Sate in a hot-air balloon. Certified museum educators are on hand.

Entry costs Rp5,000 per person, according to detikJabar in September 2026, and the museum opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, closing on Mondays. In 2025 it asked visitors to reserve a time slot at least a day ahead through its Instagram account, @museumgedungsate, then re-register and pay at the counter on arrival, so check there before you go. Because Gedung Sate is still a working government office, visitors should stay within the museum area. The Geology Museum is on the same avenue, Jalan Diponegoro, for an easy double visit.

Best for: Architecture Enthusiasts · Families · Rainy-day visits
