About MUCEM — Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations
The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MUCEM) opened in 2013 as the centrepiece of Marseille's year as European Capital of Culture. Designed by architect Rudy Ricciotti, its cube-shaped building is wrapped in a delicate concrete lattice that filters Mediterranean light.
A footbridge connects MUCEM to the seventeenth-century Fort Saint-Jean across the Old Port entrance. Together they form a museum campus exploring the cultures, religions, trade routes, and daily life of the Mediterranean basin from prehistory to the present.
Inside, semi-permanent galleries address themes of love, death, food, and faith across Mediterranean societies. The rooftop terrace offers panoramic views of the Old Port, Notre-Dame de la Garde, and the Mediterranean Sea.
