## What is Mulawarman Museum known for?

Mulawarman Museum occupies the former palace of the Kutai Kartanegara Ing Martadipura Sultanate in Tenggarong. It was built in the 1930s for Sultan Aji Muhammad Parikesit to a design by the Dutch architect H.L.J.M. Estourgie, with the Dutch firm Hollandsche Beton Maatschappij as contractor, and it is constructed largely of concrete. After the sultanate ended, the palace became the Museum Kutai, inaugurated on 25 November 1971 by the regional military commander and Governor Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie. On 18 February 1976 it was handed to the national Department of Education and Culture, and a ministerial decree of 28 May 1979 renamed it the Mulawarman State Museum of East Kalimantan.

The museum is named after Mulawarman, king of the early Hindu kingdom of Kutai Martapura, whose Yupa stone inscriptions are regarded as the earliest written evidence in Indonesian history. It is owned by the East Kalimantan provincial government and run by the province's Education and Culture Office. In early 2025 the collection numbered 5,570 objects across archaeology, ethnography, history, art, geology and biology, and the museum has digitised its records. A new exhibition space opened in July 2024 on the second and third floors of Building A, and before the 2026 Lebaran holidays staff reorganised the visitor route and rewrote the labels.

The sultanate's treasures are the main draw. Visitors come for the throne and the queen's chair, the gold Kalung Uncal necklace worn at coronations and royal celebrations, the sultan's ketopong crown, and the Lembuswana, the mythical creature that is the emblem of the Kutai Kartanegara kingdom; another Lembuswana statue stands in the front garden beside a 13-metre ironwood totem. Other galleries show replicas of the Yupa inscriptions, whose originals are in the National Museum in Jakarta, Hindu statues including a Shiva Mahakala, Yuan, Ming and Qing ceramics found around Kutai Lama and Tenggarong, Erau ceremonial masks, costumes and instruments, Dayak mandau, keris, cannon, stone tools and petrified wood.

Tenggarong lies about 30–33 km from Samarinda, a drive of 45 minutes to an hour, and Mahakam river-tour packages stop at the town's pier, a walk from the museum. The museum opens Saturday to Thursday and on public holidays from 9 AM to 4 PM and closes on Fridays. Tickets cost Rp10,000 for adults and Rp5,000 for children. Behind the main building lies the burial complex of Sultan Aji Muhammad Parikesit and his family. Facilities include a rest area, a canteen, a souvenir shop, a small library and access for visitors with disabilities.
