## What is Museum Pasifika known for?

Museum Pasifika grew out of an 'Asia Pacific Art Centre' first conceived in 2004 and opened in August 2006 in the Nusa Dua tourism complex at the southern tip of Bali. Its stated aim is to preserve and share the diverse traditions of the peoples of Asia and the Pacific and to show them side by side with significant works of the 20th century. The museum names Philippe Augier as one of its co-founders, and it presents itself as a cultural centre for art that crosses borders, with works by artists who lived in, travelled through or were inspired by the region.

The Balinese architect Popo Danes designed the complex: about 9,000 m² of buildings on a 12,500 m² plot, laid out as eight pavilions containing eleven exhibition rooms around a landscaped garden. A large entrance pavilion holds a café facing the garden, while the first floor contains a VIP lounge, offices and a storeroom. Parts of the site, including the Dutch Ballroom and the Kobot Garden Venue, are also hired out for events, so you may find a function under way in the grounds, but the galleries remain open every day.

More than 600 artworks by some 200 artists from 25 countries are permanently on show, arranged mainly by origin. Room I holds Indonesian masters, including five paintings by Raden Saleh and works by Affandi, Ida Bagus Nyoman Rai and Hendra Gunawan. Rooms II to V cover Italian, Dutch, French and other European artists who worked in Indonesia, among them Gilda Ambron, Isaac Israëls, Willem Hofker, Pierre Sicard and Le Mayeur, whose room also displays a letter from Sukarno. Later rooms turn to Indochina and the rest of Asia, then to Vanuatu and Polynesia, with sculpture, artefacts, war armour, boats and tapa cloth.

The museum opens daily from 10 AM to 6 PM, with last entry at 5 PM, and recommends two to three hours for a full visit. Tickets can be bought for a chosen date through the booking page linked from its website or at the counter: Rp77,000 for Indonesian ID holders, Rp110,000 for foreign visitors and Rp55,000 for students, with children under 12 free. An audio guide explains each room, and the museum runs batik, painting and clay workshops. It lies about 13 km from Ngurah Rai International Airport, making it an easy indoor stop from the Nusa Dua hotels.
