## What is Pekalongan Batik Museum known for?

The museum grew out of Pekalongan's batik community. A batik-lovers' association, the Paguyuban Pecinta Batik Pekalongan, was formed in 1972, and the plan for a museum took shape at a business forum in December 2005 as the city prepared to host the 59th National Cooperatives Day. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono inaugurated the museum on 12 July 2006 during those celebrations. It was first operated under the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN); in 2011 management passed to the city government, and since 2017 it has been a technical unit (UPTD) of the city's tourism, culture, youth and sports office.

The museum occupies a colonial-era building that was formerly Pekalongan's city hall; under Dutch rule it housed a finance office overseeing seven sugar factories in the Pekalongan residency. The batik expert Asmoro Damais agreed to serve as curator when the museum was set up. Displays are arranged in three rooms: the first shows batik from Pekalongan, Cirebon, Batang and Rembang with tools such as the canting; the second holds cloths donated by national figures, including the Yudhoyono family, Boediono and Ainun Habibie; and the third, the Batik Nusantara room, gathers batik from Banten, Kalimantan, Garut, Indramayu, Madura and Papua.

Pieces shown in recent displays include 1950s Adik Baji batik, prized for its soft cloth; 1970s buketan floral batik and Tiga Negeri-Lawasan cloth combining the styles of Solo, Pekalongan and Lasem; and a 1980s Walangkekek batik with a gringsing pattern from the wardrobe of the keroncong singer Waldjinah, who wore it on an official visit to Japan in 2000. During Ramadan the museum shows Islamic-influenced batik such as geometric Jlamprang, calligraphic Basurek and Rifaiyah cloths. In 2023 the family of Mohammad Hatta donated a gold-leafed kain panjang and shawl by Iwan Tirta that belonged to his wife, Rachmi Hatta.

Four Hindu stone statues — a Durga Mahisasuramardini, a Ganesha and fragments of a Ganesha and a Vishnu — stand in the corridors between the exhibition rooms and the workshop area. Beyond the galleries are a library, a batik shop, a meeting room and a workshop room used for batik training. The museum's programme of batik education and training for students was recognised by UNESCO as a best safeguarding practice, and the city says it is the only Indonesian museum to hold that distinction. Admission is Rp7,000 for adults, Rp3,000 for students and Rp20,000 for foreign visitors, and the museum opens daily from 8 AM to 3 PM.
