## What is Miri Petroleum Museum known for?

The Petroleum Museum sits on Canada Hill, now officially Bukit Tenaga, a limestone ridge overlooking Miri. While mapping the area in 1909 and 1910, the geologist Josef Theodor Erb picked out the hill as a promising place to drill, and Shell began drilling on 10 August 1910. Oil was struck on 22 December 1910 at about 130 metres. That well, Oil Well No. 1, nicknamed the Grand Old Lady, was Sarawak's first oil well; it produced about 650,000 barrels over some 60 years before it was closed on 31 October 1972, and the site is now a protected historical site.

With support from Shell and Petronas, the ground-breaking ceremony for the museum was held on 25 April 2003 by George Chan. It opened to the public in 2005, according to Wikipedia on 20 May, and was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Sarawak, Abdul Taib Mahmud. The museum is run by the Sarawak Museum Department, which describes its concept as interactive, letting visitors operate devices as well as look at the artefacts on show. A time capsule buried at the museum, containing a newspaper article of the day and a souvenir book, is due to be opened on 20 May 2105.

Inside, the galleries trace the history and technological development of the oil and gas industry in Malaysia, from Miri's first well to the present, with models of oil rigs and an earthquake simulator among the hands-on exhibits. Outside, the main attraction is the Grand Old Lady herself: the 30-metre rig preserved over the original well, which in 1910 was worked with wooden derricks and cable-tool drilling. Sarawak Tourism also recommends Canada Hill for its views over Miri and the surrounding area, so allow time to walk around the grounds.

Admission is free. The museum opens Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:45 PM and on weekends and public holidays from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, closing on the first day of Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Gawai, and on Labour Day, National Day, the Governor's birthday and Christmas Day. The department encourages modest clothing. Because the museum is on a hilltop above the town, most visitors arrive by car, Grab or taxi, and the outdoor rig and viewpoints are best seen outside the hottest part of the day.
