## What is Sangiran Early Man Museum known for?

Sangiran, in the hills north of Solo, is one of the world's key sites for the study of human evolution. Gustav Heinrich Ralph von Koenigswald began working there in 1934, and the area has since yielded so many fossils that the museum says it holds more than half of all Homo erectus finds in the world. Indonesia made Sangiran a protected cultural area in 1977, and UNESCO inscribed the Sangiran Early Man Site on the World Heritage List in 1996. The museum is spread over five units: clusters at Krikilan, Dayu, Bukuran and Ngebung, and a field museum at Manyarejo.

Krikilan, in Ngampon hamlet in Krikilan village, was the first cluster to be built and serves as the visitor centre for the whole site, explaining Sangiran's potential, the history of its research and its place on the map of hominid sites worldwide. Established in 2011, it opened to the public together with the other clusters on 19 October 2014 and is now run by the Ministry of Culture's Museum and Heritage agency (Museum dan Cagar Budaya). After a temporary closure for renovation in January 2026 it reopened on 1 February 2026, and the official visitor counter had recorded 49,726 visits to Krikilan in 2026 by late October.

Room 1, 'The Richness of the Sangiran Site', arranges fossils by ancient environment: shark teeth, turtle shells and molluscs from the time when Sangiran was a deep sea; two kinds of crocodile, Crocodylus and Gavialis, from swamps and rivers; and pig, tiger and rhinoceros from the savanna. A mini-diorama is devoted to the site's star animals — elephants (Mastodon, Stegodon and Elephas), horned animals such as buffalo, banteng and deer, and the hippopotamus — alongside casts of Homo erectus, stone tools and an explanation of the archaic, typical and progressive stages of Homo erectus in Java.

Room 2, 'Steps of Humanity', tells the story chronologically from the Big Bang to modern humans and includes the 'Sentuh Aku' (Touch Me) display, where visitors may handle fossils of an ancient elephant. Room 3, 'The Golden Age of Homo erectus 500,000 Years Ago', is a large diorama of the period when Sangiran's early humans lived beside Stegodon and Elephas elephants, wild cattle, deer and rhinoceros. Two reconstruction figures stand in its corners: a Homo erectus based on Sangiran 17, the most complete Homo erectus skull found in Asia, and a Flores human based on finds at Liang Bua. The museum is closed on Mondays, which staff use to clean and maintain the galleries.
