## What is Sri Baduga Museum known for?

The Sri Baduga Museum began in 1974, on the initiative of West Java's governor Aang Kunaefi, in the former office of the Kawedanan Tegallega, an old administrative district of Bandung. It was formally opened as the State Museum of West Java Province on 5 June 1980 by the Minister of Education and Culture, Daoed Joesoef. By a ministerial decree of 4 April 1990 it was renamed after Sri Baduga Maharaja, the Pajajaran king named in the Batutulis inscription, who ruled from 1482 to 1521.

The museum is owned by the West Java provincial government and registered as a type A general museum, run by the province's tourism and culture office. It came under a technical unit of the provincial tourism office in 2002 and, since 2018, has been part of the province's regional culture management unit (UPTD Pengelolaan Kebudayaan Daerah Jawa Barat). The main building combines the form of a traditional West Java stilt house, with a long suhunan ridge roof, with modern architecture, on a site of 8,030 square metres; some stone inscriptions are displayed outdoors.

In 2017 the collection numbered 6,979 objects in ten classes: geology and geography, biology, ethnography, archaeology, history, numismatics and heraldry, manuscripts, fine art, ceramics and technology. Floor 1 covers natural history, animal and plant fossils, prehistoric human fossils and the Hindu-Buddhist period. Floor 2 turns to later religions — Confucianism, Christianity and Islam — language, social organisation, farming and fishing tools, Sundanese wedding attire and a colonial-era landowner's uniform. Floor 3 covers trade, technology, traditional children's games and a plantation zone, with the gold-coloured Kecapi Naga Maung zither and a barred room of heirloom weapons, paintings and textiles.

Tickets cost Rp5,000 for adults, Rp2,000 for children and students and Rp10,000 for foreign visitors, according to detikJabar in September 2026. The museum opens Tuesday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and at weekends until 2:00 PM, and closes on Mondays, which staff use for collection maintenance. Weekdays belong to school groups: staff told detikJabar in 2023 that Tuesday to Thursday could bring 700–800 visitors a day, against about 50 on Fridays and weekends, so a weekend morning is the calmest time to visit.

Best for: Families · History Enthusiasts · Budget Travellers
