## What is Tjong A Fie Mansion known for?

Tjong A Fie was born Tjong Fung Nam in 1860 in Meixian, Guangdong, and came to Labuan Deli in Sumatra aged 17, following his brother Tjong Yong Hian, who was already established in Medan. The brothers built businesses in tobacco, tea, rubber, palm oil and sugar plantations, banks, mining, real estate and railways, and in 1906 joined Cheong Fatt Tze of Penang to build the ChaoChow–Sukow railway, the first in China financed and built by overseas Chinese. In 1911 Tjong A Fie succeeded his brother as Majoor der Chineezen, head of Medan's Chinese community, and funded schools, hospitals, temples, churches and mosques.

The mansion was begun in 1895 on an 8,000-square-metre plot and completed around 1900, built as a gift for his wife. Its 35 rooms over two storeys combine Chinese, Malay, European and Art Deco elements, follow feng-shui principles and surround a large open-air courtyard that symbolises the 'Well of Heaven'. On the ground floor, rooms on one side were reserved for Chinese guests and a room on the other for the Sultan of Deli and his party, with a central reception room behind a tall Chinese-style door. Upstairs are a ballroom and the family altar facing it.

Tjong A Fie lived here with his third wife, Liem Koei Yap of Binjai, and their seven children until his death on 4 February 1921. His descendants opened the mansion to the public in June 2009, after years of effort by Fon Prawira Tjong, the family member who managed it. In 2013 a grant from the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation paid to restore the worst-damaged third of the roof with tiles made by artisans in Java, and in 2016 the mansion won the 'Museum Cantik' (engaging museum) category of Indonesia's Museum Awards. It is a protected cultural heritage building.

The mansion opens daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with last entry at 4:30 PM, and closes only on Chinese New Year's Day. Entry costs Rp35,000 and includes a guided tour in English or Indonesian; the number of visitors inside is limited, so you may wait before entering. Family photographs, paintings, silk clothing and furniture such as Tjong A Fie's mahogany bed tell the story of the family and of the Malay-Chinese culture of old Medan. The mansion stands on Jalan Ahmad Yani in the Kesawan area, where Tjong A Fie also built the clock tower of Medan's old city hall.
