## What is Trowulan Museum known for?

Trowulan, in Mojokerto Regency, is thought to be the site of the capital of the Hindu-Buddhist kingdom of Majapahit. Its ruins were known by the 19th century: Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, governor of Java from 1811 to 1816, reported temple remains scattered over many miles. Looting prompted a simple storage building that became the first museum. On 24 April 1924 the Mojokerto regent R.A.A. Kromodjojo Adinegoro and the Dutch architect Henri Maclaine Pont founded the Oudheidkundige Vereeniging Majapahit (OVM), a society to study Majapahit's remains; by 1926, with finds piling up, its founders resolved to create the Trowulan Museum. It closed to the public in 1942 when the Japanese interned Maclaine Pont.

After independence, management passed to the Indonesian government's antiquities service, today's East Java heritage preservation office, and the collection moved south and became the Balai Penyelamatan Arca (Statue Rescue Centre). The present museum opened in 1987 on a site of about 57,625 square metres beside the Kolam Segaran, combining the old Trowulan collection with most of the stone sculpture once kept in the museum at Mojokerto. On 3 November 2008 it was renamed Pusat Informasi Majapahit (Majapahit Information Centre), and the Ministry of Culture now registers it as Museum Majapahit. Stone sculpture is also displayed in open-sided garden pavilions around the main buildings.

The museum describes its holdings as the largest collection of Majapahit relics in Indonesia, in clay, ceramics, metal and stone. Most date from the Majapahit era, but finds from the earlier East Javanese kingdoms of Kahuripan, Kediri and Singhasari are also shown, as are relics discovered across the province. Highlights include the portrait statue of King Airlangga as Vishnu mounted on Garuda from Candi Belahan; a winged figure said to portray Menak Jinggo, legendary king of Blambangan; a finely carved relief of the Samudramanthana, the churning of the ocean of milk; part of a temple recovered at Ampelgading in Malang; and Majapahit terracotta.

The national museum registry lists the museum as open Tuesday to Sunday from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, closed on Mondays and public holidays, with entry at Rp2,500 and free on Thursdays. Change is coming: in September 2026 the Ministry of Culture broke ground on a revitalised Museum Majapahit, planned on about 10 hectares within the Trowulan national cultural heritage area with a potential collection of more than 88,000 artefacts, under a 114-working-day contract with the state builder PTPP. Check the current situation before you travel, and combine the museum with Trowulan's other Majapahit remains.
