"The Renaissance's most iconic vision of divine beauty, born from myth and Medici patronage"
History & Story
Botticelli painted The Birth of Venus for the Medici family, likely Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici, around 1484–1486. It was probably intended to hang in the Villa di Castello near Florence alongside his earlier Primavera, forming a pair of mythological allegories celebrating Neoplatonist ideas about love and beauty.
The composition is drawn from classical sources, particularly the ancient Roman goddess Aphrodite Anadyomene (Venus rising from the sea), described in Hesiod's Theogony and celebrated in poetry by the Florentine humanist Poliziano, who was closely associated with the Medici court. Botticelli's Venus has often been compared to the ancient Greek Cnidian Aphrodite of Praxiteles.
Why It Matters
The Birth of Venus was revolutionary in depicting a life-size nude female figure from classical mythology — the first such large-scale work of the Renaissance. While religious paintings had depicted Eve's nudity, a monumental pagan goddess painted with such idealism and dignity was genuinely new. The painting's soft, lyrical line and the goddess's contrapposto pose show Botticelli synthesising ancient sculpture with contemporary Florentine ideals of beauty.
