Overview
Yogyakarta, seat of a reigning sultanate and Java's cultural capital, keeps its key museums close to the Kraton and Malioboro. Sonobudoyo covers Javanese culture from prehistoric bronzes to wayang, the Affandi Museum preserves the home and studio of Indonesia's great expressionist, and Ullen Sentalu, up on Merapi's slopes in Kaliurang, tells the story of the Mataram royal houses.
Suggested itinerary
Day 1: Kraton (Sultan's Palace) in the morning → lunch near Alun-Alun Utara → Sonobudoyo Museum in the late afternoon (open until 9 PM, closed Mondays) → evening stroll up Malioboro. Day 2 (Tuesday–Saturday): drive north to Ullen Sentalu in Kaliurang for an early guided tour (from 8:30 AM) → return to the city for the Affandi Museum on Jalan Laksda Adisucipto in the afternoon (last visits before its 4 PM close).
Best time to visit
The dry season, roughly April to October, brings clearer skies for the drive up to Kaliurang; go early, before afternoon cloud. Avoid Mondays for Sonobudoyo and Ullen Sentalu and Sundays for the Affandi Museum, and expect crowds during school holidays and Lebaran.
