The Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) in Pengosekan, Ubud, opened in 1996 to show Balinese painting from classical Kamasan work to contemporary art, alongside Walter Spies, Raden Saleh and other artists linked to Bali. Set in gardens by rice fields, it is also a busy venue for dance, gamelan and cultural workshops.

Museum Puri Lukisan on Ubud's main street opened in 1956 and is the oldest art museum in Bali, founded by Ubud's royal family and the Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet to keep the best Balinese painting and woodcarving on the island. Its four galleries trace modern Balinese art from the Pitamaha movement of the 1930s onward.

Ubud, in the hills of Gianyar regency, is Bali's art capital, and its three major museums between them tell the story of Balinese painting from classical Kamasan work to the present. Museum Puri Lukisan sits on the main street, Neka Art Museum overlooks a river valley in Sanggingan, and ARMA in Pengosekan pairs its galleries with nightly dance.
Day 1: Museum Puri Lukisan on Jalan Raya Ubud (morning) → Ubud Palace and market → Neka Art Museum in Sanggingan after lunch (last entry 4:30 PM). Day 2: ARMA in Pengosekan from late morning — Bale Daja, Bale Dauh and the gardens, perhaps a painting or offering-making workshop → stay for the 7 PM dance performance on ARMA's open stage.
The dry season from about April to October is the most comfortable, though July and August are the busiest months; see the galleries in the morning before tour groups and the midday heat. Check the date of Nyepi (usually in March), when all of Bali, museums included, shuts down for 24 hours.

Ubud has no convenient public bus for visitors. Puri Lukisan is an easy walk from Ubud Palace; ARMA is about 30 minutes' walk south along Jalan Hanoman, and Neka about 40 minutes north-west beyond the Campuhan bridge. Taxis, ride-hail cars and rented scooters cover each hop in around 10 minutes.
