Overview
Banda Aceh's two main museums stand less than a kilometre apart near Blang Padang field in the city centre. The Aceh Tsunami Museum, designed by Ridwan Kamil, is a memorial and disaster-education centre for the 2004 earthquake and tsunami, entered through a dark corridor between walls of running water. The Aceh Museum, founded in 1915, centres on a wooden Rumoh Aceh stilt house and the 15th-century Cakra Donya bell. Both close on Fridays.
Suggested itinerary
Day 1 (Saturday–Thursday): Aceh Museum at the 8:30 AM opening for the Rumoh Aceh, the Cakra Donya bell and the manuscript galleries (1–1.5 hours, finishing before its 12 PM–1:30 PM break) → walk less than 1 km west to the Aceh Tsunami Museum for the corridor of water, the Well of Prayer and the rooftop evacuation area (about 1.5 hours) → Blang Padang field and the Kerkhof Peutjut cemetery beside it → Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, about 11 minutes on foot.
Best time to visit
Arrive at opening time, 8:30 AM at the Aceh Museum and 9 AM at the Tsunami Museum, on any day except Friday. School holidays and long weekends bring several thousand visitors a day to the Tsunami Museum, and school groups make up much of the Aceh Museum's audience. During Ramadan the Tsunami Museum keeps shorter hours, and it closes for several days over Eid al-Fitr.
