Overview
Denpasar's three museums are spread between the old city centre, Renon and the beach at Sanur. The Bajra Sandhi Monument in Renon tells the island's history through 33 dioramas, and the Le Mayeur Museum keeps a Belgian painter's carved beach house and 88 of his works. Bali Museum, the island's oldest, on Puputan Badung square, is closed for re-roofing until the end of November 2026, so build a visit around the other two for now.
Suggested itinerary
Day 1: Le Mayeur Museum on Sanur beach at the 8 AM opening, while it is still cool (about 45 minutes) → stroll along Sanur's beachfront → Grab, Gojek or taxi to the Bajra Sandhi Monument in Renon for the 33 dioramas and the top-floor viewing room (1–1.5 hours; opens 8:30 AM on weekdays, 9:30 AM at weekends). Day 2, once Bali Museum has reopened: Bali Museum on Puputan Badung square (daily 8 AM–4:30 PM) → Pura Jagatnatha temple next door.
Best time to visit
Weekday mornings are calmest, as weekends are the busiest days at Bajra Sandhi. On Sundays the Niti Mandala field around the monument is car-free from 6 to 10 AM, a good walk before it opens at 9:30 AM. Avoid Friday afternoons, when older listings show shorter hours at Le Mayeur, and public holidays, when the museums close. Bali Museum is closed for re-roofing until the end of November 2026.
