What is Ambarawa Railway Museum known for?

The museum occupies Ambarawa's old railway station, built by the Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NIS) and opened on 21 May 1873 as Willem I station, alongside the line from Kedungjati. It took its name from Fort Willem I, a large fortress in Ambarawa completed in 1848. From 1905 a rack railway climbed from Ambarawa towards Secang and Magelang, using a toothed rail to tackle steep gradients, and in 1907 the station was rebuilt in brick, replacing its earlier wood-and-bamboo structure.

The line declined in the 1970s and the station closed in 1976. Central Java's governor, Supardjo Rustam, designated it a railway museum, the provincial parliament's Commission D agreed the site on 6 October 1976, and the museum opened on 21 April 1978, running steam tourist trains from Ambarawa to Tuntang and to Bedono. The building was recognised as a heritage building in 2010. Today it belongs to PT Kereta Api Indonesia and is run by its tourism subsidiary, KAI Wisata (PT Kereta Api Pariwisata).

The collection comprises 26 steam locomotives, four diesel locomotives, five coaches and six wagons. Among the best known are the B25 rack tank engines built by Maschinenfabrik Esslingen in 1902 for the mountain line to Bedono, the Hanomag B51 12 of 1902 that works the flat line to Tuntang, the C28 21 built by Henschel in 1921, and the articulated CC50 29 from the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works of 1928. An audio-visual room screens films on railway history at set times each day.

The museum is open every day from 8 AM to 5 PM and drew 180,944 visitors in 2025, according to KAI. Heritage rides are the other draw: a 60–90-minute round trip to Tuntang on the flat line, and trips to Jambu and Bedono on what KAI Wisata calls the only active rack railway in Indonesia. Ride fares and schedules are not published online, so check before you travel. The station, yard and trains can also be hired for exhibitions, photo shoots, weddings and festivals.
