What is Istana Jahar (Royal Customs Museum) known for?

Istana Jahar was begun in the reign of Sultan Muhammad II of Kelantan, who intended it for his grandson Long Kundur; English Wikipedia dates the palace to 1855. It was completed under his successor, Sultan Ahmad, and when Long Kundur came to the throne as Sultan Muhammad III in 1889 he used it as a royal residence. After repairs in 1911, Sultan Muhammad IV named it after the jahar tree that grew in its grounds and gave it to his son Tengku Ismail, who continued to live there after becoming Sultan Ismail in 1920; he reigned until 1944.

The palace is admired for its distinctive Kelantanese royal architecture and fine carvings, and its original design was kept when it became a museum. English Wikipedia notes its pentagon-shaped porte-cochère, with a first-floor balcony from which members of the royal family could watch ceremonies held in front of the palace. Perbadanan Muzium Negeri Kelantan (PMNK), the state museum corporation that owns the building, opened the Museum of Royal Customs here with a ceremony performed by the Sultan of Kelantan on 27 July 1992, and the palace is protected as a historic building under the National Heritage Act 2005.

Inside, displays follow the ceremonies of Kelantan's royal court and of the Malay life cycle: betrothal, the pelamin bridal dais and bridal chamber, the melenggang perut rite in pregnancy, berendoi cradle ceremonies, pijak tanah, when a child first sets foot on the ground, and circumcision. Other rooms show brassware, textiles such as kain cindai and limar songket, personal ornaments and costumes, and the tools of Kelantan's goldsmiths together with gold jewellery. In the Balai Senjata, the weapons hall at the back of the palace, are old Kelantanese weapons including keris, badik, kelewang, swords, spears and lances.

Istana Jahar charges PMNK's standard rates: RM2 for adults and RM1 for children, or RM4 and RM2 for international visitors, paid in cash. PMNK gives opening hours of 8:30 AM to 4:45 PM from Saturday to Thursday, with closures on Fridays and public holidays; Friday and Saturday are Kelantan's weekend. The palace stands on Jalan Sultan in Kota Bharu's royal quarter, close to Istana Balai Besar. Istana Batu, the Royal Museum, is less than 100 metres away and the Bank Kerapu war museum about 200 metres to the west, so the three are easily combined on foot.
