Overview
Kota Bharu's four state museums, all run by the Kelantan State Museum Corporation (PMNK), sit within a short walk of one another. Around Padang Merdeka in the royal quarter, the Bank Kerapu war museum recalls the Japanese landings of December 1941, while Istana Jahar and Istana Batu, less than 100 metres apart, show royal customs and the sultanate's history. The Kelantan State Museum, less than a kilometre south, covers prehistory and wayang kulit.
Suggested itinerary
Day 1 (Saturday–Thursday): Bank Kerapu beside Padang Merdeka at 9 AM (about 1 hour) → walk about 200 m east to Istana Jahar, the Museum of Royal Customs, and its Balai Senjata weapons hall (1–1.5 hours) → Istana Batu Royal Museum, less than 100 m away (1 hour) → lunch around Pasar Siti Khadijah → walk less than 1 km south to the Kelantan State Museum on Jalan Hospital (1 hour), adding the Kelantan Art Gallery beside the Tourist Information Centre if time allows.
Best time to visit
Visit from Saturday to Thursday: Kelantan's weekend falls on Friday and Saturday, and PMNK closes its museums on Fridays but opens them on Saturdays. Mornings are best for walking between the palaces. PMNK's own pages give different hours (8:30 AM–4:45 PM or 9 AM–4:30 PM), so arrive within the shorter window, and expect closures on public holidays and the first two days of Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Aidiladha.
