Overview
Taiping, whose growth the Department of Museums Malaysia credits to the Malay tin magnate Che Long Jaafar, is home to Malaysia's oldest museum. The Perak Museum, founded in 1883 near Taiping Lake Gardens, fills a white colonial building with animal skeletons, Perak silverwork, Orang Asli crafts and old pottery, with an F-86 Sabre jet in the grounds. About 10 km away at Matang, the free Matang Museum occupies Kota Ngah Ibrahim, the walled 1858 home of the Larut chief Ngah Ibrahim.
Suggested itinerary
Day 1: Perak Museum on Jalan Taming Sari at the 9 AM opening for the elephant and python skeletons, Perak silverwork and Orang Asli crafts (1–1.5 hours) → outdoor exhibits, including the F-86 Sabre jet → Taiping Lake Gardens. Day 2: car, taxi or Grab about 30 minutes to the free Matang Museum at Kota Ngah Ibrahim in the cooler morning, walking the fort walls and visiting Ngah Ibrahim's grave (45 minutes–1 hour) → continue along the same road to the Kuala Sepetang mangrove forest.
Best time to visit
Arrive at the 9 AM opening at both museums, before the heat builds; mornings are also cooler for walking Kota Ngah Ibrahim's fort walls. Both close for the first two days of Hari Raya Aidilfitri and the first day of Hari Raya Aidiladha. JMM's leaflet says the Perak Museum also closes on the first Monday of each month, and its last admission is 4:30 PM.
