Overview
Miri, where Sarawak's first oil well struck oil in 1910, has two free museums run by the Sarawak Museum Department. The Miri Petroleum Museum stands on Canada Hill (Bukit Tenaga) beside that well, the Grand Old Lady, with interactive galleries and views over the town. The Niah Archaeology Museum is about 1.5 hours' drive from Miri in Niah National Park, close to the UNESCO-listed Niah Caves, and introduces more than 40,000 years of human life there.
Suggested itinerary
Day 1: Miri Petroleum Museum on Canada Hill by Grab, taxi or car at the 9 AM weekday opening (about 1 hour) → the Grand Old Lady rig and the hilltop views over Miri, before the heat builds. Day 2 (early start): drive about 1.5 hours to Niah National Park → Niah Archaeology Museum from 9 AM (10 AM at weekends; 45 minutes) → the 3–4 km trail to the Great Cave, where the Deep Skull was found, and the Painted Cave (several hours; bring sturdy shoes and a torch).
Best time to visit
Visit Niah between March and September, when Sarawak Tourism says the weather is drier, and start early: the museum opens at 9 AM on weekdays and 10 AM at weekends, and the cave trail takes several hours. See the Petroleum Museum on a weekday morning, before the heat on the exposed hilltop. Both museums close on seven holidays, including the first day of Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Gawai.
