What is Lampung State Museum known for?
Lampung's provincial museum was planned from the 1975/1976 budget year, and its foundation stone was laid in 1978. It was inaugurated on 24 September 1988 by the education and culture minister Fuad Hassan, in a ceremony held alongside the International Literacy Day celebrations centred on Bandar Lampung. It was named Ruwa Jurai, 'two lineages', after the provincial motto Sang Bumi Ruwa Jurai, which reflects the two main adat communities of the Lampung people, the Saibatin and the Pepadun. Ownership and management passed to the Lampung provincial government, and today the museum is a technical unit of the provincial education and culture office.
It is Lampung's first and largest museum and is registered as a Type A general museum in the national museum registry. The collection, put at more than 4,500 items by Indonesia's tourism ministry and about 4,735 by Indonesian Wikipedia, spans geology, biology, ethnography, archaeology, history, coins and heraldry, manuscripts, ceramics, fine art and technology. Ethnography is the heart of it: ceremonial accessories, traditional dress and ritual objects of the Lampung people, including tapis, the province's distinctive traditional cloth.
Exhibits begin in the yard. An old colonial-era cannon is the museum's best-known landmark, beside a replica of a traditional Lampung stilt house — raised, by tradition, to protect its owners from tigers and elephants — and a huge iron ball used to clear land for transmigration settlements in 1953–1956. Dragged between two tractors to flatten trees and scrub, it opened areas such as Raman Utara and Purbolinggo in East Lampung and Seputih Banyak and Seputih Raman in Central Lampung. Inside, Saibatin and Pepadun ceremonies are laid out in sequence, from lapahan and bedu'a through birth, cukuran (haircutting), tooth filing before adulthood and marriage to death rites.
The museum keeps short, morning-focused hours. According to the national museum registry it opens Tuesday to Thursday and at weekends from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and on Fridays only from 8:00 to 10:30 AM, closing on Mondays and public holidays; admission is Rp5,000. It stands on Jalan H. Zainal Arifin Pagar Alam No. 64 in Bandar Lampung. Because the museum publishes little visitor information online, confirm the hours before a Friday or holiday visit, and allow about an hour for the yard and the galleries.

Can I take photos inside the Lampung State Museum?
No photography policy is published online, so ask staff at the entrance before photographing the galleries. The cannon, the traditional house replica and the iron ball in the yard make good subjects from outside.
