What is Petrosains, The Discovery Centre known for?
Petrosains opened on 25 March 1999 as a science discovery centre inside Suria KLCC, the shopping centre at the base of the PETRONAS Twin Towers. It is run by Petrosains Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the national energy company PETRONAS, which also manages the Twin Towers. The centre aims to make science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) enjoyable and inspiring for Malaysians. Beyond KLCC, the company runs PlaySmart learning centres in other cities and the travelling PETRONAS StreetSmart exhibition.
The exhibits are made to be touched and played with. The Platform recreates an offshore oil platform in the middle of the city to explain how oil and gas are found and produced. The Energy Capsule ride tells the story of energy from the Industrial Revolution to a sustainable future. In Speed, Formula 1 fans can drive a simulator around the Sepang circuit and test their reactions. Space explains how astronauts live and work and lets visitors program a replica NASA Mars rover. The Geotime Diorama goes back 200 million years among dinosaurs.
Younger visitors head for SPARKZ, with a wind tube for paper helicopters, a grain pit, interactive art on big screens, Robo Soccer and a TotSpot area for toddlers. In Tech Lab visitors build and meet robots, try a flight experience and learn to code. A 3D Theatre shows short films, and science shows run through the day. A Maker Studio runs hands-on making sessions for RM5 per person, and the XPLORASI gift shop sells educational games, toys and books. Petrosains recommends allowing at least 2.5 hours for a visit.
Hours are 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM on weekdays (last admission 4:00 PM). On weekends, public holidays and school holidays the centre opens 9:30 AM to 7:30 PM (last admission 6:00 PM). No. The Energy Capsule is an immersive ride about the story of energy, from the Industrial Revolution to a sustainable future. It costs RM12 on top of admission, and you need a Petrosains admission ticket to buy it. Combo tickets (Science Centre plus Energy Capsule) cost RM55 on weekdays and RM65 on weekends for general-admission adults, or RM34 and RM41 with MyKad.
