What is Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery known for?

The gallery began as the Muzium Kenangan, or Memorial Museum, built in Klang in 1988 as the idea of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, who reigned as Sultan of Selangor from 1960 until his death in 2001 and served two years as Malaysia's 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong. After his son, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, ascended the throne in 2001 as the ninth Sultan, he ordered that the Sultan Suleiman Building be turned into a new Royal Gallery dedicated to his late father. The Sultan officiated it on 19 October 2007, and on 27 October it won first place in the specialised category of the FIABCI Malaysia awards.

The Sultan Suleiman Building is a two-storey colonial building completed in 1909 and credited to the British architect Arthur Benison Hubback. Under British rule it held the land and administration offices; during the Second World War the Japanese used it as their war headquarters; and after independence it served local authorities, including as the Klang District Office, until its restoration as the gallery. The project was also named a finalist in the public-sector category of the 2008 FIABCI Prix d'Excellence, with the certificate presented in Amsterdam on 29 May 2008.

Inside, the halls follow a set sequence. After an introduction to the gallery's history, the Royal Genealogy Hall traces the Selangor sultanate from its origins in 1766 in the Bugis royal family of Opu Tanreburung Daeng Relaka, through Raja Lumu, the first Sultan, to the present ruler. The second hall covers Sultan Salahuddin's childhood and years as crown prince; the third presents the royal family and replicas of Selangor's crown jewels; the fourth his royal duties and military and public career; the fifth his reign as Yang di-Pertuan Agong; and the sixth his personal collections and gifts. The seventh is for temporary exhibitions.

Admission is free, and the gallery opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, closing on Mondays and public holidays. It stands within walking distance south of Klang's KTM Komuter station. The gallery has a shop selling royal-themed merchandise, and its website and Instagram account post news of the Selangor royal household. For enquiries, telephone 03-3373 6500 or email the gallery through its website's contact form.
