What is 10 November Museum known for?
The museum commemorates the Battle of Surabaya, which began on 10 November 1945 when republican fighters and townspeople, the arek-arek Suroboyo, resisted Allied troops in the largest single battle of Indonesia's National Revolution; the date is now kept nationally as Hari Pahlawan (Heroes' Day). It was founded on 10 November 1991 to explain the meaning of the Tugu Pahlawan, the 41.15-metre Heroes Monument that President Sukarno inaugurated on 10 November 1952, and was formally opened by President Abdurrahman Wahid on 19 February 2000. It belongs to the Surabaya city government and is run by the technical unit that manages both monument and museum.
The museum was placed beside the monument and almost entirely below ground, so that it would not interrupt views of the Tugu; from outside, little more than its stepped, pyramid-shaped roof is visible. The site carries its own history: the monument stands on land once occupied by the colonial Raad van Justitie (Court of Justice), a building later used by the Japanese Kempeitai military police. Inside are two floors. The ground floor holds the entrance, an audiovisual room where a documentary on the battle is screened at set times, the first display room and a zone on how news of the 1945 Proclamation spread, including a Javanese and Madurese version sent by Morse code.
Displays combine documentary photographs, copies of letters, uniforms and weapons used by Surabaya's fighters, the Japanese and the Allies, with static and electronic dioramas; a diorama of the Resolusi Jihad of 22 October 1945 was added in 2020. The flagship exhibit is the original recording of Bung Tomo's radio speech, and the museum also holds his radio and a handwritten diary of more than 110 pages describing how his broadcasting station kept moving to evade Dutch intelligence. Upstairs, captured weapons include a Browning machine gun, a Japanese 7.7 mm Hotchkiss gun, a 9 mm Carl Gustaf submachine gun and an M95 carbine, alongside the story of Bu Dar Mortir, who carried food and supplies to the front line.
Tickets cost Rp8,000 for the general public; Surabaya school students enter free and students from elsewhere pay Rp3,000. The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM and is closed on Mondays. Tickets are sold through the city's tiketwisata.surabaya.go.id platform, where Surabaya also runs short promotions, such as Rp500 museum tickets in December 2025. Exhibits carry QR codes that link to more historical information. Each 10 November the Tugu Pahlawan hosts the city's Heroes' Day commemoration, and the museum takes part in related events, such as the Bajawara video-mapping exhibition of November 2025.
